About Us
A preserved cultural and historical site at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Chagga Caves stand as a living reminder of the Wachagga people’s heritage and way of life.
The Chagga Caves were once refuge tunnels, built centuries ago to protect local communities during tribal conflicts. Today, they serve as an invaluable cultural site where visitors can explore underground passages, experience traditional Chagga architecture, and learn about the customs that shaped daily life on the mountain slopes.
Alongside guided cave tours, visitors can enjoy a range of immersive cultural experiences including traditional house visits, coffee making demonstrations, local Chagga lunches, and cultural dances, all offering a deep connection to Tanzania’s rich heritage.
We offer immersive cultural experiences that connect visitors with the living heritage of the Chagga people.
We're based in Marangu on the eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, about 1 hour from Moshi and 3 hours from Arusha, depending on traffic.
By car: follow the Moshi–Himo road and branch north toward Marangu.
